 • 1200 Heads and exhaust

Hi,

I am after a pair of 1200 heads to put on my Vee but i'm not sure if any 1200 heads will do or if i have to match the series that are already on the car.

Also what are the rules when it comes to exhausts, can i have seperate collectors for each head?

Thanks

H Michael,

Most Formula Vee heads under 1200 rules are ported and have the valve seat geometry set up for maximum flow efficiency as well as being cc'ed to the rules (either 38cc or 43cc). If you want a second set of heads you'd be better of getting ones prepared already for Formula Vee. They are reasonably inexpensive as many are left over from the categories move to 1600cc rules in the last 5 years. The only thing is that most will be cc'ed to 43cc not 38cc allowed by the rules.

To start from scratch to get the same performance as those that have been prepared previously you would be on a hiding to nothing (if you can actually find some cores).

If you do have some 1200cc (40HP) heads lying around and want to know if they are any use, the square rocker post heads are the ones to go for these are know as D Series heads below is from the Formula Vee Handbook from the 1990's detailing each series of heads, the number is the last part of the part number.

#373 A,B & C round rocker post, less Finns for heat dissipation, can be made to flow OK

# 373 square rocker post, most commonly used.

# 371 D same as above, slightly better for porting.

# 371 F after market similar to 373, avoid Mexican (poor casting).

Hope this helps,

Regards,
