Hi All,

I have an older formula vee and while the rear suspension is nice and springy (too springy I think) the front suspension is very weird.

If you bounce up and down it has very little travel if any at all. If I jack it up, the suspension just stays up until I jump on the front end to lower it again. When jacking it up off the ground, the front wheels droop down very slowly rather than simply drop like a normal car.

I have put some grease in there but not sure if it had the issues before I did that as I havent had the car for too long. Does it prefer heavy gear oil rather than grease? I used standard grease that I have used in suspensions for years. Perhaps I used too much.

It is a kingpin front end. I am happy to take any pics of it if anyone thinks it would help.

Thanks for your time,

Damian

Hi Damian
Sounds like you have binding issues...
One of the things with the link pin/king pin fronmt ends is that you would install shims into the link pins to give them some neg camber. The trick was to get old worn out bushes... anyway if you put to many shims in you can cause it all to bind up.
From memory there is a locking bolt going through the link pin and a 14mm square on the end. if you loosen the lock bolt and then back of the link pin your suspension should free up, then take out some shims and re tighten.
If this dosnt work, remove the complete stub axle/ king/link pin assembly and see if it is binding in the turkey arms as these have been known to bend & distort.

Best of luck
