 • Query regards cockpit sizes

Posted by Flagman at 19-07-2007 21:24
Guys, am looking at both Vees and Improved Proddies at the moment regards jumping the Armco and having a fang.

Vees would be the fave, but I have a few queries.

1) I'm not a small guy. I am only 5'10" but I'm about the size of a front row forward. Are there any frames that fit the larger bloke, or would I need to do some creative engineering?

2) What's a normal race weight for a fully laden Vee? Just trying to work out if the trailer I already have could take a race car on it.

Cheers!

Open wheeler race cars are by design minimalistic pieces of machinery, so before thinking about your size, you'd be better determining whether you like the idea of confined spaces. If you are happy with confined spaces (and I highly recommend you become happy as fanging a Vee is very enjoyable) there are a number of "full-forward" type drivers currently racing Vees. I am one of them at 5'9" and....ummm...lets just say I should be paying greater attention to those too big waist TV ads. I have no problems fitting in to my Kingfischer (similar to a Sabre), even if the car is 35kg over its minimum weight.

On that note, most Vees without the driver on board will weigh somewhere between 380-430kg. Minimum racing weight (which is not how you'd tow unless the tow vehicle has no space for the driver) is 475kg for a 1200cc or 490kg for a 1600cc.

Hope that helps with your queries.

If you have time during a racing weekend in your local state, go visit the Vees in the paddock and I'm sure you'll have no problems with drivers letting you try out their cars for size.

Best of luck,
Anthony
