Hi everyone

Can a few people please give some advice as to which brand and weight oils they like to use for the engine and gearbox.

Cheers

I would guess that if you asked 20 drivers what oils they use you could most likely get 20 different answers. For what it's worth here is what I use but it may be dramatically different from the next person.

Engine Oil - I have used a few different ones over the years and basically stuck with Penrite Semi Synth stuff for the last few years. I usually used the HPR 5 which was 5W-40W in the winter in Victoria and HPR 15 which was 15W-60W or something if the weather was hot (not often!). However, recently I have been using a semi synth oil which is 10W-40W which I got from a VW workshop. Not sure of the brand but is made by the same mob that make ACE 30 which is designed for older air cooled vehicles.
You'll find people use everything from repco or valvoline $9.95 stuff from Kmart up to Mobil 1, Redline synthetic etc and everything in between. I guess the main thing is to change it regularly and make sure the level is kept high.

Gearbox Oil- Some use Auto Transmission Fluid which is thin and cheap but I'm not so sure about it's lubricating ability. I've seen guys using Castrol Syntrax and Redline Synthetic which are expensive ones. I myself have been using a Penrite Gearbox Oil which is called "Light Manual Gearbox Oil" or something. It's semi synth I think and around the 70W mark so is pretty thin. I've had no problems with this.

Cheers
