 • Camera in Formula Vee

Posted by Cujo74 at 28-06-2008 19:09
Hi Everyone.

This is probably not a new question but I will be coming to the National CHallenge this year and my sponsors are hoping to get some footage of the racing from my car (probably as you all blast away at the start and leave me finding first gear) and I have shown them some of the great footage you have collected (YouTube) and now I'm wondering, where do I get a good camera from???

The camera's I have used in the past in the old HQ gave really bad quality videos. I would really appreciate any advice that would help me. This will not only help me further my racing but will hopefully get more people interested in racing Formula Vee's from up here in Darwin.

Cheers

The cheapest way is to record on to a digital video camera which has AV input capabilities using a pencil camera and microphone attached to your rollhoop. You will nedd a compatible camcorder to start and buy a camera/microphone package which will connect to the camcorder.

ie http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/products/team/

You need to locate the camcorder in the car somewhere and attach the camera to it. You can use it remotely if you have a LANC remote cable which will work with some Sony camcorders.

Otherwise, there are a few digital solutions which write directly to a memory card. I have one of these

and find it of a better quality, lighter and easier to use than a camcorder setup. Another type is the ARCHOS system amongst others.

Hey Cujo74,

Davin above has a good point, however i have an alternative that takes great quality video's and is only $260, not $1000+.

I'm a dealer for the GoPro Motorsports Camera here in australia. It can mount to anywhere on the car via either the suction cap device, or adhesive quick-release mounts that i guarantee will hold! It weighs just 100 grams, which is the CAMS requirement for cameras in racing.

This camera records to SD card, so no seperate mounting of the recording device. It also doubles as Still camera, and can be mounted and used for everything, it's even 30 meters waterproof! I have had one mounted right behind the suspension to see how that is working while checking tyre movement mid corner etc. A great learning and technical tool.

Go to my website at www.goprosport.com.au or email me at sales@goprosport.com.au for more info.

If your interested, we can even look at a much better deal with some stickers on your Vee?

Cheers,
Shaun.

Gday Shaun

How quickly can I get one to NT, how long does it take to set up and is this the same camera the Adam Proctor has??

You're right I do deserve it mate and have gone to your website and ordered one.

See you at the Winton mate.

Andrew,

I send everything registered post, so that you can track it's progress, and make sure it gets to you. It will be there within days. I can also do express if you want it asap!!

Yes it's the camera that Adam has, he is very impressed with it. You can check out his footage on youtube at Eastern creek when he won from last on the grid, as it is great racing! P.S the sound on this video is not representative, as Adam had it set for inside a car, not outside in the wind.

See you at Winton!!!

Cheers mate,
Shaun
