25-8-2008 Glover finds pace at Winton.
Kieran Glover continued his consistent form last weekend making the trek from Tassie in only his second run at the challenging Winton Raceway.Qualifying saw some great times with the dominant Daniel Reinhardt winning pole in lap record time. He left a big gap to his closest rivals Glover and Frith who battled through qualifying in their own air posting times over 0.7s slower than pole.Race 1 saw Reinhardt and Glover shoot away from the other competitors and it became clear both would be neck and neck all weekend. Reinhardt tried his best to break Glover in the early laps but with no success it would come down to the last lap as the lead two gapped the rest of the field. Glover was hitting the corners sweetly and staying in the tow which was the only way to hold onto the back of the Reinhardt rocketship as it blasted out of the tight Winton corners. Glover kept the pressure on the Reinhardt machine with at times only millimetres separating the two cars. The pressure showed as dust flew when Reinhardt dropped a wheel off on turn 4 with Glover’s visibilty disrupted only temporarily. Setting up for a final attack Glover missed an apex allowing a gap to first place and the chance was lost. He had to settle for a close 2nd just 0.38s behind Reinhardt, but picked up a lap record of 1:35.6647 along the way. Frith was 4.2s further back taking a distant 3rd.Race 2 was a similar affair with Glover and Reinhardt breaking Frith and the rest of the field by quite a margin. The two squabbled over the lead for the whole race with Glover at one stage passing around the outside coming into turn one as the two drivers searched for the winning edge. Glover was not however in a position on the final lap to make a clean move and so once again had to accept 2nd place this time by only 0.23s. It was Reinhardt’s turn to get the tow and the lap record with a great time of 1.35.4857.Race 3 was the one to watch. Reinhardt led Glover then Frith and all three were locked in that order for the first few laps. Reinhardt put the peddle down and Glover had to really dig in to stay with the flying sabre. As the race progressed the leading pair of Reinhardt and Glover slowly gapped Frith and it looked as though they may turn it into a two horse race again. As it became clear that Reinhardt would not be able to shake Glover the pace suddenly dropped off and Frith was brought back into the battle for the win. Sensing the danger of being locked in battle with Frith, Glover capitalised on a great run through turns 1 and 2 by diving under Reinhardt into turn 3 on the final lap, hoping to leave Reinhardt and Frith to battle each other. Unable to make a gap over the chasing two on the last lap, Glover was under pressure and took a defensive line along the final straight. Reinhardt tried to pass coming into the braking zone but with Glover’s vee already on the inside Reinhardt used tarmac and grass to try and make the pass. Maintaining his line, Glover won the corner but now Frith was within striking range. Glover ran just wide on the final corner and Frith was attacking Reinhardt. Coming to the line Reinhardt wound his machine up and drove past Glover, getting the win by just 0.04s with Frith a further 0.4s back for a close 3rd. There was a small conselation however as Glover had regained his lap record this race with a great time of 1:35.4042.Race 4 was not as happy for Glover, making an error on lap one and allowing Frith past as Reinhardt drove away. Regaining 2nd place from Frith, Glover closed the gap to Reinhardt but the damage had already been done and Glover finished just over 1.0s behind Reinhardt with Frith only a further 0.1s back in third. Nick Jones had a great run in the final and finished 4th only 0.8s behind Frith a great result for his debut run in the Jacer.Consistent improvement for car and driver in their first year in 1600 FV sees us looking forward to the Phillip Island round in October and more good results for Glover Race Team.
