Race Report – Round 1 of the 2010 Formula Vee Championship – Winton

A stunning start to the 2010 Formula Vee Championships held at Winton between 5 – 7 March.  Round Sponsors, Australian VW Performance and JRD, provided prize money to the final race placegetters (1st - $150, 2nd - $100, 3rd - $50).  Most members can’t remember the last time prize money was supplied for the final placegetters!

Jake Fouracre debuted in the new teampana.com Jacer.  His sensible drive was rewarded with consistent top 5 finishes, eventually giving Jake the equal round winner, sharing with the current national champion Daniel Reynolds.

But it was JRD’s James Simpson that dominated the first half of Round 1 qualifying first and wining the first 2 races.  James’ luck ended with visor issues and a soft rollover in the last race.  James is OK, with no injuries and the car will be ready in time for the next round.

James’ team mate Heath Collison (unfortunate enough to be involved with James’ rollover) improved as the weekend progressed, finally finishing on the podium in the final.

Daniel Reynolds had an electrical issue during qualifying, starting from rear of grid in race one.  He gained positions in each race and won the final.

Round 1 hosted a range of new drivers, Beacham racing’s Sam Power dominating the wet race, starting mid field and winning by a country mile.  Sam’s team mate, Matt Stubbs securing a string of 2nd places during the weekend.

Talha Bilal also debuted at round 1 with an exceptional drive.  Finishing midfield until he unleashed his wet driving skills in race 3, overtaking several cars, until, bravado and inexperience got the better of him, spinning off the track twice.

Ashley Quiddington debuted in Andy Nethercote’s car, finishing as high as 6th.

Maddison Gray debuted in the category in a 1200 powered vee, and began her motorsport journey with great passion and determination.

South Australian Wes Young won the 1200 division with a convincing drive, dicing with the local 1600s.  Daniel Beaven not too far behind.

Long time karting rivals, and ‘mature racers’ Kleo (Mandy) Mandikos and Shane (Shanis) Purvis had a couple of ding dong battles throughout the weekend.  Both showing great potential.  Keep your eye on these two as they worth their way up the field.

Phil Oakes, recently promoted from 1200 to 1600s’, had mixed results on the weekend.  He was top 3 in Friday practice but couldn’t quite keep the pace in the races. At times he mixed it up with Shanis and Mandy for an all out mid field battle.

Anthony D’Anna continued his fine form finishing just behind the front bunch. Jason Coppard and Ken Filbey tried a range of different setups to find grip and improved as the weekend progressed.

Jack Flood returned to Formula Vee racing after spending the summer break rebuilding his car.

Long time member and racer, Phil Gardener converted his car to the 1600 spec over the summer break.  After blowing an engine, and getting tangled in riff raff, Phil emerged at the end of the event in 1 piece, hungry for more action at the next round.

David Frith and Andrew McLaughlin where involved in a qualifying accident.  Both guys getting their cars back on track, but not able to bag any meaningful points from the weekend.

Several new members are expected to join as at the next Round (Phillip Island 16 -18 April) and will also complete the Observed Licence Test.
