ROUND 4 CAMS NSW 2009 FORMULA VEE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP - THIS WEEKEND AT EASTERN CREEK
The fourth round of the the biggest and best open wheel racing championship in Australia takes place this weekend at Sydney's Eastern Creek circuit.
In what is still one of the largest fields over the weekend, 27 Formula Vees will attack the 4 kilometre long Eastern Creek circuit, where the unexpected should always be expected.
Veteran Formula Vee 1200 driver and reigning 1200 Champion, Bruce Pearce, has a solid but slender lead in the 1200 class over the consistent and committed Bernie Cannon and the enthusiastic Rookie Sue Cannon, although any of these competitors need to look carefully in their mirrors as Michael Stipo now seems to be bearing the results of months of work on his ex_Frank Kleinig Mako by chief engineer Colin Contessa.
In the Open (1600) class, Canberra's Daniel Reynolds continues on his Championship charge in his strong and stable Sabre, with Daniel now holding a solid lead over second placed Michael Kinsella in his self-engineered Jacer.  Kinsella is looking competitive for this weekend following a good result at Winton last weekend, with some of that lost fine-tuning now being rediscovered, so Daniel can't take his championship lead for granted at any time over the weekend.
Third place holder, "Mr Stinger" Stephen Butcher, is only a few points behind Kinsella, and no doubt intends to attack Kinsella for second place following hours of work to repair his Stinger (and himself) after his Oran Park horror-roll.  Stephen is also on the charge following some good results at Winton, and so Michael himself can't take his points gap for granted!
John Mcdonald (Mako 3) and Tim Hamilton (Jacer) are also in reach of second place, so Butcher will also need to watch his mirrors in the pointscore race!  Hamilton has repaired his Jacer after the Oran Park incident, and has been track testing to make sure that his top five place is secured.
But not only should Daniel, Mick, John, and Tim beware eachother, but they should also fear a resurgent Aaren Russell, who is close behind them all  on the pointscore ladder, with Aaren fighting to make up for the engine problems which ruined his second round at Wakefield Park.
The now-retired Adam Proctor follows Aaren on the pointscore, but Adam will no doubt be swamped by Dylan Thomas (Stinger), the Nathan Sansom-engineered Michael Cluderay (Jabiru), and then Dean Cavanagh (Jacer).  Leigh McGarvie will be missign Eastern Creek,a dn so his place on the ladder looks vulnerable, with the enthusiastic Darren Williams ready to attack Eastern Creek and Leigh's position in his newly-purchased and incredibly fast ex-Proctor Jacer.
An incredibly-small range of points then separates dozens of 1600 drivers, with Anthony Cavanagh (Jacer), Ryan Stott (Jacer), Morgan Freemantle (Astec), Timothy Brook (Spectre), Clem Fama (Jacer), Garry Hook (Manta), Jayson Williamson (Mako), Mark Williams (Jacer), Leigh Porter (Jacer), Ian Chivas (Jacer), Ben Porter (Checkmate), Gary Ogden (Mako), Geoff Chappell (Stinker), Simon Pace (Mako), Kieran McLaughlin (Jacer), Daniel Pauperis (Gebert), Ken Shepherd (Stealth), and Nathan Brumby (Stinger), all within reach of eachother on the points ladder.
Can Darren Williams win on debut in his new Jacer?
Can Daniel Reynolds continue his domination of the championship?
Can Michael Stipo push Bruce Pearce aside on the track?
Can Michael Kinsella push Reynolds aside on the pointscore?

Finally, Eastern Creek sees the debut of 17 year old Jon Collins, son of former high profile lady Vee driver, Sue Hughes.  Sue has repurchased her fast Jacer 98 so that Jon can hopefully challenge for Rookie of the Year title.
Let's wish Jon, and also to all drivers, a safe and competitive weekend.
